A photo chemical substance, of a purplish red color contained in the retina of human eye and in the eyes of most animals that is quickly bleached by light, passing through the colors, red, orange and yellow and then disappearing. Visual purple helps a person see in the dark. Without vitamin A a person could develop night blindness or poor vision at night or in dim light.
